The presentation was very informative to to an extent that it exceeded my expectations. for example is the speed of our workers being 5 to 1 in production (not sure who is faster but...) and our problems lie on the business processes and information because of our backward technology we have here in the Philippines. But we do have something better than them, its the strength of our micro-economy which is unusual to other countries.

The nexus of value chain and work-centered analysis in the Philippine footwear industry

The discussion tackled the obstacles and possible improvements for the areas in the supply chain within our country's footwear industry as its primary example. The findings in this research can be also be applied to existing and futue supply chains.
By using the pareto and work-centered analyses the speaker identified that the industry needs to develop and improve its business processes. The speaker also gave possible remedies like improved information gathering and organization and enhance talents to maximize human resources.
Hi Jim. It's a realization that we really have to improve our methods and utilize ICT tools for process improvement as far as manufacturing is concerned. Mfg is not our turf at the moment. While I agree, the Phils has become strong in micro-business that other countries like India and Australia follow our business models.
To Dominick--I hope as an ICTM student, you will learn well your value chain analysis, and these work-centered model and the pareto analysis which are actually good tools. I actually use pareto as my rule of thumb in accomplishing my tasks esp on a full-load work week. :)

The first presentation showed the reality on our SMEs its very disappointing that so much potential talent/skills are being wasted in a system so old that we are being left by our competitors 5 finished products to 1, though having the same technology. And another disappointment is we failed to see the potential of our products just like what Mr. Beng-Hui said we really too much on indigenous materials while our competitors had already produced a synthetic replacement for those indigenous materials.

It's quite good that a new system had been made for research regarding issues in poverty. Through this, more information could be taken and gathering all of it would be easier, organized and managed for the people involved in the project to be able to acquire more data to know more on what action they could do in order to solve the issues regarding poverty.

I agree to the part that the use of online knowledge should be balanced. It should be both a commodity and a free good. What then is the purpose of the information if it's not used to inform other people and for people to make use of it?

From what I have perceive from the lecture, the SME of the Philippines has very poor performance. Other countries can perform their work 5x faster than ours. Packed items being exported to other countries are being rejected due to an abnormality of a single item in the package. Most companies never pay to ship it back to the Philippines, resulting to a major loss for the company.
Jewelries being made in the Philippines are for the next season for the reason that Philippine manufacturers cannot keep up with the trend.
It is sad to see the poor performance of our country. If this continues, how will we provide a better future for our workers?

Net Negotiations: How Filipino Families Domesticate the Internet
The lectures were all very interesting and helpful for our future not just as IT students but also as IT professionals. The first lecture I attended was the Windows Registry Infection Detection using Malware Source Code Analysis. This was actually very technical and heavy for me. The terms presented such as decompressor, assemblers, decompilers, etc. were beyond our comprehension. But it was understandable because it is a professionally made infection detection system (made by Soluziona, IT professionals who also made systems for hospitals because my mom, whose a nurse was able to review and approve their proposed system) plus the fact the malware source code analysis would entail great expertise and years of study for it to be understood and applied. Despite the comprehensive explanations behind this, what shocked me was how they were able to create an outstanding system using the ILoveYou Virus/ Melissa virus as references! It was extraordinary how a negative was used as basis of developing something positive.
The next lecture was about how Filipino families domesticate the internet. Overall, this was the lecture that got me very interested and awed. Being a very nationalistic and a family oriented person, I loved the idea how there was incorporation of Philippine cultural values in a computer thesis or analysis project. I loved how the project wasn’t done for the purpose of additional information studies to the IT world but instead, to encourage Philippine identity construction and to enhance family relationships. Who could’ve thought that internet plays a role in families after all? Instead of focusing on the negative implications of internet technology (how sources aren’t reliable and how it hinders people to have personal interactions) why not use this is as the tool to improve people’s welfare especially that of the Philippine setting? This lecture inspired me to conduct future IT projects that are value driven and for the benefit of not just for self but society as well.

The first presentation was informativeand nicely presented, it was about malware source code analysis, though technical and very complex it may prove to be helpful to me in the future when we graduate.
the 2nd presentation was titled Net Negotiations: The Internet in the Filipino Household. It was conducted by Mr. Jason Cabanes. He informed us of the impact of the internet in the middle class family, especially those who have a family member abroad. This was very informative, specially for us being Filipinos and all, it was interesting due to the fact that the internet is important for a typical Filipino family, because of the benefits that it delivers.

All the information needed to be transmitted to the audience were done very smoothly, that is, it was very understandable. Concepts and other tools regarding the research were discussed in a manner that everybody understood. I bet you that if I didn't know anything about value chain, I would STILL understand what her purpose was for sharing the research.
Being one of those who studies value chain, it was very helpful that she suggested tools that will aid us in dealing with the cycle. As she had mentioned, problems lie in different aspects of the company but there is always one or more that are greater than the others. In operations, the rate of problem arising is higher in comparison to others. This may be due to the fact that information is misused most of the time.

I still remember the presentation of Mr. Cheng on last year's S&T Congress. Before, he only talked about creating a mobile game with only a single player but on this year's S&T Congress, his presentation was still already about reating mobile game but on a multiplayer basis.
Creating this kind of thesis paper is so impressive. Being an It student and a future it professional, having this kind of idea, creating a mobile phone, is very interesting because it doesn't really require you to be an IT graduate. The software that is being used is very user-friendly. Those who are interested in mobile games can now create their own.

The topic is interesting because from what I have known all this time is that if you want to earn a lot, be in a corporation or a big company but he contradicted that belief by explaining that SMEs are where big income would be in. Also he explained why our SMEs are not blooming even if they have potentials.

Avenues for Electoral Modernization in the Philippines

The first presentation is about on how social networking sites affect the privacy of an individual and not being punished by the law. ICT is not the problem, it was made to help us and it depends to the user on how he will make the most out of it.
The second and third presentation is about gaming technology. Different kind of connections was discussed such as bluetooth, infrared and wifi. Truly these advancements bring the gaming field into another higher level.
The fourth one is about the status of Philippines on how they will do the automated election. Unfortunately, other countries are ahead of us but the government is striving to implement this kind of election.
All these lectures were interesting, informing students in how the ICT changed and improved processes throughout different areas of the industry.

Their presentations were just 'wow!' in a sense that they're stuffing so much in my head that I couldn't get around most of what they're saying even if I kinda understood what they're talking about. It was scholarly and very professional which probably put off most people but it's good to realize that problems and solutions are way beyond what can even conceive in class. Take for instance the small-medium enterprises that are apparently fly-by-night operations since they have workers who aren't really workers and source their materials from scrapheap. It's saddening to see that their operations are already crap in addition to their efficiency being questioned by those machine-like Chinese -- and they're all Philippine companies. And the worst part is that most of these so-called companies seem to be reluctant on cooperating with government or 3rd party consultants. They're too fucking shallow only wanting financial assistance. They're like bratty children.
I have mixed thoughts regarding the second presentation though, the one regarding the ripple effect on the entire system when a simulated effect is introduced to the transportation system. I couldn't get any shit she was throwing at me and when they made sense, I just realize how simple it is. And that social accounting matrix crap she introduced, I couldn't make anything out of it. There's no contextual basis on our part so we couldn't relate at all. She could have also toned down on the highfalutin words which half of the people in the room probably didn't understand. It's hard to appreciate something I don't understand.
So yeah... All in all, it wasn't a waste of time. I actually enjoyed it, even if I was bombarded with mostly incomprehensible stuff.

The first speaker talked about that ICT is for all. The impact of the ICT law will depend on the individual users. They were made for human benefits like cellphone is used for communications. However, sometimes they lead to prejudice. Hence, ICT must harmonize with human needs to prevent any harmful intensions.
The second speaker discussed the gaming design. It used many complex diagrams to design a game like the use case diagram, activity diagram etc. it also used some network connections for testing like the Bluetooth network, wireless LAN etc... Actually, the topic was very technical and complicated to me.
