ORGMNGT FILM VIEWING

ORGMNGT FILM VIEWING – OCTOBER 30, 2008

Watch the first half of the film “The Replacements” and read the synopsis below and answer the following questions.

The Replacements (2000)

Synopsis: Shane "Footsteps" Falco is a disillusioned football player who believes his dreams have all but dissipated. Once a red-hot All American prospect, Shane now regrets ever believing that the NFL would draft him. However, fate takes a strange twist for Shane when during the 1997 NFL season, a player's strike leaves the fields (and stadiums) empty, leaving team owners scrambling to fill uniforms as fast as possible. When the Washington Sentinels bring back the contentious and self-retired head coach Jimmy McGinty to seek out players who will play with their hearts rather than their wallets, he picks Shane to lead his mismatched crew of outsiders through the strike. To everyone's surprise, the ragtag team goes on an unprecedented winning streak as they discover in themselves the ability to hope for more than they ever thought possible...maybe even the playoffs, which has been denied to the Sentinels for seven years.

STRAMGT CASE STUDY

GIVEN THE DISCUSSION OF THE STRATEGIES IN CHAPTER 5 (including the other approaches in the internal env), recommend a STRATEGY on each of the ff situation, JUSTIFY your recommended strategy and suggest a specific course of action and a complementing IT strategy as necessary (The IT strategy can also serve as a recommended course of action). 1. Kopyatrade used to be the leading photocopying center. But presently it ranks last compared of its competitors because of poor, malfunctioning, old copier equipment; poor customer services of the staff and limited number of services. These reasons also resulted to poor quality of copied paper outputs. The only advantage they have in the moment will be the good locations, strategically located near the schools and other major offices.

2. Kapatid’s Coffee is a popular coffee shop in Cebu and the other parts of eastern Visayas. They source various local coffee from the northern and southern Luzon, southern Mindanao and from easter Visayas. KC is a 100% Filipino-owned company aimed to promote and sell local Filipino coffee and also aims to help the local farmers.

Together with coffee, they also serve pastries (like cheesecake, chocolate cake, cookies) that are offered by their international competitors.

KC has decided to explore the Metro Manila market as another potential market that can offer higher exposure of the local coffee brands and create a brand name among foreign tourists and local buyers. How can you help KC.

3. Splashy Corporation is another Filipino-owned corporation. It is already in the top 50 corporations in the Phils. Surprsingly, Splashy is one local product that can compete head to head with international brands such as Unilever and Procter and Gamble as far as beauty products (soap, cologne, lotion, body scrubs etc) are concerned. They have a wide range of products. Their hair products have lower prices and make use of more organic materials compared to Revlon or Wella products. Splashy is also the pioneer and the number seller of papaya soap known to be a whitening soap. Here are the situations faced by Splashy.

a. With the advent of gluthatione/metathione, this has been a threat to their papaya soap. Buyers of the papaya soap are now converting to met soaps.
b. Splashy wanted to enter the Southeast asian region market. Here they will compete with countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia manufacturers. Recommend a strategy and actions that the company can undertake to succeed.
c. Splashy presently has some backend MISs for their operations but they don’t have any web presence. What automation development approach can you recommend, what systems can be done and at what timetable?

Nine Essentials of a Mission Statement

1. customers
2. products or services
3. markets
4. technology
5. concern for survival, growth and profitability
6. philosophy
7. self-concept
8. concern for public image
9. concern for employees

According to Fred David, while vision tells "what do you want to become", mission tells "what is your business". A mission is a declaration of attitude and outlook.

Hence, if for instance a mission statement will pronounce that it is a Filipino-owned company intended to serve the general Filipino society~~in essence, the firm is designed to serve the Filipino citizens, adhere to Filipino customs, practices and will employ or encourage Filipino entrepreneurship for that matter.

V-chain students. Please feel free to give/share your insights in this blog reg the recently concluded S&T Congress whether it's about supply chain or ICT as a change enabler. Then indicate your complete name and section. Thanks..

ICT FOR ALL--The theme of the 10th DLSU S&T Congress

Comm. Tim Angelo de Rivera talked about the Philippine ICT Strategic Roadmap and the current position of the Phils as far as e-governance is concerned. He brought and shared a lot fo good news both for the public and private sector. One of the directions mentioned too is the creation of the Dept of ICT. While US and other advanced countries do not have a dept like this, the Phil gov't has actually benchmarked with other Asian developing countries. I agree that it is high time and relevant the Phils create a unit such as the Dept of ICT. This is not to encourage bureaucracy but to empower the government to spearhead taking leverage on ICT to better serve the society.

What do you think of this??..

Need to update

It has been over a year now since I posted in this blog. I have to rejuvenate my thoughts and senses and once again commune with solace offered by the web. Having a blog allows me to slowly track my ideas in the past or review what had made me preoccupied.

After two months of teaching this first term of SY 2008-09, I can feel the workload squeezing me. I have three sections of Mngmt of Technology, one section of Supply Chain course, a special class on e-Business and one class on Research Methods. My Methods class technically has 9 groups struggling to find, research, write and defend a decent thesis proposal with a lame one-hour meeting a week (which I commonly end after two hours). While my Methods students are in a fight or die situation like the gladiators during the Roman period, I couldn't help squeeze myself to impart all the ideas and experiences I learned in the proposal formulation.

I am also mentoring thesis groups (two IT groups+one ICTM group).

And the rumor is true--my Supply Chain class is the noisiest.
